Native american women that are uneducated that live in their reservation are becoming prostitutes due to the poverty because they cant get a job to support their own family. women between 18 and 60 report high incidence of being physically and sexually abused.

In the report, Funded in part by the Women's Foundation of Minnesota, tells information from more than 100 women, in the first study to collect the personal experiences of American Indian prostitutes in the state and searches solutions from the native women. Interviews we done in Duluth, Bemidji and the Twin Cities. On the age scale of 18-60 most women had been prostituting for 14 years. In the studies from the women, they have been bought by over 200 buyers.

"Some of these women were hearing for the first time that trafficking is a form of sexual violence," said Nicole Matthews, director of the coalition. "To them, violence is the norm." This paragraph especially caught my attention, it's unreal to think that these woman have no idea what they were getting themselves into.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion this is an issue that should have some attention drawn toward it 18-60 is a wide range for ages affected by this. This should be enforced as a much stronger law due to the fact prostitution is illegal.
ReplyDeleteI knew the unemployment rate was high. but I didn't know it was that high that the women had to resort to being prostitutes in order to make money. It must really suck to be a native american in todays america.
ReplyDeleteWoman shouold never need to resort to having sex for money, but for woman up to 60 years old having to do it, thats terrible. There needs to be clinics set up and meetings that they can all go to for support and money tohelp get them out of it.
