"A recent 5 month 8,300 mile journey across 26 states gave natives a chance to voice the concerns of tribes across the country and to launch a coordinated movement to intensify the community's presence on Washingtons political radar."
Basically, this article is about how the Native Americans are working together to keep their family together and to keep their lands along with their rights. The natives 30 years ago made 'The Longest Walk' and completed it on July 22, 1978 in Washington D.C, they came from California to D.C.. They did this so thay could communicate to the congress about their needs on a regular basis. Congress doesnt have many natives around their area so it was hard for the natives traveling to get attention from them. In that result they made another journey from California to D.C. on July 11th many more joined this 2nd walk. They went throught tough weather conditions to keep the things they need and some even joined last minute or on the way.
"when you see the elders and people coming together, you forget those things."-Margret Morin. Natives acounted for 1% of the population in 2006 at 4.5 million.
Why wouldnt they just drive or fly to congress, why do you think they walked??
I think they walked to prove a point that this really matters to them and to make a bigger statement and it got them noticed more. I think they also walked because in the past they were made to walk the trail of tears which was torturous to them and their families.
ReplyDeleteI think they doing something great, to help their culture by walking all the way to D.C. to improve their life and their community. Since no one is going to help them they are helping themselves. They are walking to be noticed to be taken into consideration along with the rest of the country, they are apart of this country too.
ReplyDeleteI think they walked to show that they weren't going to let the congress take away their rights and freedom. They walked to honor everyone in tribes to show that they care about their culture and congress can't just take that away.

ReplyDeleteI also think the native americans walked to make the point that they want what they belive in and that they are strong hearted and will do almost anything to get what they deserve.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the native americans are walking for a purpose. That purpose is to make headlines just like this. They want everyday americans to recognize what the life of a native american is like. this walk put them in the position to finally use their voices and tell the rest of the US what is happening
ReplyDeleteI think they walked because they found a way to protest in a peaceful way without fighting and killing anyone. Like the first walk, they maybe was thinking if they do this for the second time the government would see that they are serious about what they are fighting for!
